Speech Contests
Lake Counties Annual Speech Contests
Informative and lively speech competitions showcased student’s extensive research and knowledge on the topic of pollinators and their importance to vegetation during the annual Soil and Water conservation Districts (SWCD) Speech Competition. Lakeviews was held at the Daly Middle School Auditorium and For Rock/Silver Lake SWCD’s competition was held at the North Lake School in May.
Both coordinated by Nancey Pennington of the SWCD, ten students from each school in all took turns delivering 3-5 minute speeches before a panel of judges and fellow students on the theme “Local Heroes, Your Hard Working Pollinators.” The speeches covered topics such as the importance of bees, bats, birds and the wind in pollinating plant life and the potential consequences of reductions in bee populations. Each speech provided detailed information collected and researched by students, each presenting an extensive knowledge on the subject matter. According to the information provided by student speeches, bees account for the pollination of 80 percent of all plant life and that 75 percent of all crops depend on pollinators.
While every speech was informative and well delivered, three from each school were selected as being the best based on delivery and details provided. From Lakeview, third place went to Rayanna Blair, who received $50 courtesy of SWCD, second place was awarded to Dally Evans, receiving $75 and the first place $100 prize was achieved by Chloe Fiveash. Each of the three finalists also received $10 gift certificates to the Polar Bear.
From Fort Rock/Silver Lake district, third place went to Sean Cornell, second place Jillian Rudolp and first place Jessica House. These students also received the same monetary awards from the district for their achievements and a gift bag.
Stewardship Week
Stewardship Week is one of the world’s largest conservation related observances, held the last Sunday in April to the first Sunday in May and was created by the National Association of Conservation Districts (NACD) in 1955 to encourage Americans to focus on stewardship. During this time, the Soil and Water Conservation Districts promote stewardship and conservation activities.
Stewardship Week helps to remind us all of the power each person has to conserve natural resources and improve the world around us.
